In my opinion these three quotes describe the Danes and the country of Denmark rather well.
“Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.”
– Marcellus in William Shakespeare’s Hamlet
“This is Denmark. We are Danes. We keep our distance. We do not pick a seat close to strangers if other seats are available. We do not talk to strangers in the trains.”
– William Wilson, a character in Steen Langstrup’s Metro short story
“Denmark is like a secret little place with its own special language.”
– Helena Christensen, Danish fashion model
Small country with a language no one can understand – and people, who are distant and not easy to make friends with.
But hey, at least the beer is good and snegles are delicious.
The Two Bonuses
These are not about Denmark per se, but have been stated by Danes – and I really love both of these.
“I will remain on the throne until I fall off.”
– Margrethe II of Denmark, the present queen
“To travel is to live.”
– Hans Christian Andersen
